Power plant towers over a river at sunset.
A view of the Ravenswood Generating Station as seen from Roosevelt Island. Located in Long Island City, Queens, this 2,480-megawatt facility is operated by LS Power/Helix Energy Solutions Group. Once coal-powered, the plant has primarily used fuel oil and natural gas since 1971. Known for its towering red-and-white stacks, Ravenswood plays a key role in New York City’s energy grid. Notably, an early proposal included the construction of a nuclear reactor on the site, though it was never realized.
